  • Location: Ituri Forest
  • Conservation Status: Threatened
  • Hippos are well adapted for life in the water and are found in slow-moving rivers and lakes in Africa. With their eyes, ears, and nostrils on the top of the head, hippos can hear, see, and breathe while most of their body is underwater. At the Zoo’s Urban Jungle, guests can see female river hippo Funani and her female calf, born February 8, 2020. The active, adventurous youngster is named Amahle (pronounced ah-MA-shleh).
